Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source Learning Management system (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The software has 55,110 registered sites helping to educate over 44 million users in universities, schools and companies. Moodle was originally created by Martin Dougiamas in 1999 and due to its open nature has been continually evolving since.

Moodle has all the features typical of of an e-learning platform such as: assignment submission, discussion forum, files download, grading, Moodle instant messages, online calendar, online news and announcements and an online quiz. In addition Moodle is highly extensible allowing for many varied modifications that add new functionality. Moodle’s modular nature allows for plug-ins that can add features such as: graphical themes, methods of enrollment, content filters and many more.

Moodle is multi-platform running without modification on Unix, Windows, Mac OS X, Netware, Linux, FreeBSD and other systems that support PHP and a database.
